Celebrate love: our Valentine`s Day collection
24 January 2012

With hearts popping up all around, you know it’s getting close to that time of year where we stop and cherish the one we love. Whether you’re looking to lure a new love or celebrate a long lasting union, we have a gorgeous arrangement to suit your every need. Here are some of our top picks for this February 14th - Valentines Day.

Tried & True
: You know that you can never go wrong with a dozen red roses. A classic symbol of romance, this hand tied bouquet of deep red roses is designed with anemones and Queen Anne’s lace. Ecuadorian roses (1 dozen): hand tied bouquet $125, vase arrangement $200

Twist on Traditional: Perhaps this is the year to shake it up a bit with a splash of colour. This Valentine’s day, we will have an abundant collection of roses in shades from soft pink to fuchsia  to peach blush and rich coral. Or why not surprise her with these voluptuous garden roses.  Garden roses (1 dozen): hand tied bouquet $150, vase arrangement $250

Mix It Up
:  So maybe roses aren’t her thing. We can create a beautiful mixed flower arrangement like this simple yet graceful vanilla hand tied bouquet. Mixed bouquet (as shown) $150

Crazy for Carns
: It’s time to discard the notion that carnations lack personality. Enter the Love Bomb - a glorious cluster of electric magenta carnations. Bold, edgy and truly a crowd pleaser.  Small $60, Large $100

Purple Crush
: Knock her stockings off with a Purple Crush. This edgy, asymmetrical vase arrangement features purple carnations in three striking shades and Picasso calla lilies.  $175

Over the Top
: There’s no such thing as over the top when it comes to Valentines. Ok maybe a 10 lb Chocolate Heart might be slightly over the edge. If you’re looking to really blow her away, we suggest the rose Love Bomb. We’re pretty sure that this mass of red Ecuadorian roses will leave her speechless. $500

Avoid the rush. Be sure to place your Valentine’s Day order well in advance. Stop by the shop, email or phone us and we’ll be happy to discuss how to design the perfect arrangement for your Valentine.

From February 9-14, we will also have a mini shop at the FCP Community Corner (between HMV and Suzy Shier, concourse level).

See you on Valentine’s Day.

Pistil featured in Weddingbells magazine
02 January 2012

The New Year has set off to a great start.   Weddingbells’ Spring + Summer edition is now on newsstands with lots of inspiring ideas for brides-to-be including a spread featuring a bouquet from Pistil.

In the “Calendar Girls” feature, brides are encouraged to let the wedding date and season of their nuptials inspire the look and feel of the celebration. With loads of wedding ideas by month, the Weddingbells team selected Pistil’s bouquet for Miss October.

If you’re a Miss October bride, add vintage sophistication to your wedding with the moody hues and fashion mindset of Mad Men. Achieving the aesthetic of the 1960s can be done with simple but carefully planned touches. It might be in the tailoring with high-waisted skirts for your bridesmaids. Or maybe it’s through more subtle elements like statement accessories of pocket squares for the guys and perfect white gloves for the girls.

When it comes to the flowers, approach it with modern influence. We took the classic golden hues of 60s style and added a contemporary twist by playing with texture and size. Our bouquet is designed with zinnias, asters, marguerite daisies and Echinacea centres and beautifully finished with a creamy satin ribbon.

Wherever your planning takes you, don’t be afraid to embrace the visual style of the 60s by adding cool retro touches.

Deck the halls: gift ideas from our holiday collection
01 December 2011

December is here and that means the countdown to the holidays is officially on. If you’re like most, the calendar quickly gets booked and with each invitation comes that same dilemma “what do I bring”. Our holiday collection has a little bit of everything from mod ceramics to innovative plant gifts and, of course, lots gorgeous floral arrangements.

Mad for mod: We love these Danish designed ceramics pieces. From the Bottino line, these vases are inspired by the classic fishing float. Their bold striping and sharp use of colour are a perfect complement to our mod inspired holiday collection.

Snow globes minus the snow: Our cacti terrariums have been a hit and especially popular gifts for men.   Simple to care for and a great conversation piece, our take on the snow globe makes for a unique gift choice.

Weird & wonderful: These unusual creatures are air plants. They don’t grow in soil. Instead they prefer dry surfaces like the glass container below, a branch or they can even be hung on a wall. Air plants require minimal care, making them a marvelous choice for someone new to plant ownership.

A touch of red: If you’ve popped by the store, you’ve probably noticed that our teal and lemon-lime holiday palate is far from traditional.  But we knew that we couldn’t get through the holidays without red. If you’re looking for a classic holiday arrangement, we have a wide selection of potted and cut amaryllis, paper whites, winter berries and much more.

Door décor:  Last but certainly not least, you cannot forget a gift for yourself. Our beautiful and lush wreaths are designed with the hottest décor and door trends in mind. Filled with fresh, aromatic foliage, they will create a striking focal point to your home while filling the air with the alluring scent of the Canadian wilderness. We also offer custom wreath and garland making.

All gifts will be packed in our signature black box and dressed with teal and hunter green tissue.

Happy holidays to all!

Taking topiary art to a whole new level
25 November 2011

If you’ve walked by Pistil lately, you’ll notice a new structure has erupted in the middle of the shop. Our owner, Yvonne, travelled to France and Italy this summer and returned chock-full of ideas. Among the most notable and truly mind-blowing attractions were the gardens of Versailles. She wanted to find away to inject a bit of Versailles into Pistil. Her vision was to build a parterre of the Toronto skyline.

Versailles, located on the outskirts of Paris, was built in the 17th century. The palace itself is quite remarkable but most visitors are often more amazed by the elaborate and meticulously maintained gardens.

Landscape architect, André Le Notre, was commissioned by Louis XIV to create the gardens of Versailles.   The design of the gardens was to be of equal importance as that of the palace. Using the classic French formal garden style, Le Notre used the principle of symmetry to create vast vistas that would span over 15,000 acres of land. Exploring the grounds is very much a discovery journey full of the unexpected. Intricate pathways led to wondrous gardens, sculptures and fountains. Each designed to enhance and highlight the architecture of the chateau. This would be Le Notre’s greatest masterpiece.

Back at the shop, we were armed with the task of creating a parterre (tightly clipped hedge) of the Toronto skyline. Unlike the hornbeam hedges of Versailles, we choose a more seasonally fitting type of greenery - noble fir. With its soft blue-green needles and aromatic scent, this evergreen was a perfect choice for this task. And noble fir has the unique quality of not shedding its needles - making for another good reason to use it for this project or for a Christmas tree.

Starting with a sketch, tools and measuring tape, the construction began. For two solid days, we cut, shaped, trimmed and trimmed again.   It took a few attempts to get the CN Tower right and to avoid any resemblance to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In the end, our skyline created an interesting conversation piece and has drawn a tonne of interest for its alluring fragrance.

At Pistil, this holiday season is all about aromatics. What better time to bring the winter woodlands indoors. Walk into the shop and you’ll be taken on a sensory journey. In addition to the noble fir, the store is filled cedar and white pine from B.C. We also have Carolina Sapphire from South Carolina. It has an unusual blue-gray colour, dense and lacy foliage, small yellow flowers and an intriguing lemony mint aroma. Eucalyptus has been a new favourite for the season. Making a comeback from early 80s floral design, we’ve chosen eucalyptus for its beautiful soft teal colour, zesty fragrance and healing qualities.

Needing a break from the work day grind, come and visit us at the shop. Close your eyes and you might think you’re in a cabin up north.
