Happy Earth Month: Going Green At Work
20 April 2011

...Not in the literal sense, but more in the environmental and sustainability sense.  For our third Earth Month post, we are talking about going green at work.

Since we are located in the financial district and most of our clients work in offices in the area, we thought we would share some easy tips to go green at the office in preparation for Friday`s Earth Day.

1. SHUT DOWN THAT COMPUTER

We all want to leave work at the office, so, when you are done for the day, shut down your computer instead of keeping it run all night.  Computers waste A LOT of energy!

Fact: The average computer requires between 36W and 250W when it is active, compared to between 1.5W and 3W when it is turned off and plugged in

2.  CUT DOWN ON PAPER USAGE

Instead of reviewing a hard copy document with the team, view it online.  Keep files on computers instead of in filing cabinets.  And, if you need to print something out, print it out on recycled paper and print on both sides of the page.

Fact: Recycled Paper takes 60-70% less energy to produce that regular paper

3. BRING A FRIEND TO WORK

If you can`t ride your bike or walk to work, go the carpool route and drive a friend or co-worker.  Not only does it cut down on carbon emissions, it`s a lot cheaper if you split the gas!

Fact: If every commuter adds one more person in their car, we could save 8 billion gallons of gas in year!

4.  USE GREEN MATERIALS...OR DON`T USE MATERIALS AT ALL!

More and more companies are jumping on the sustainability train and creating products that are greener - pencils, pens, biodegradable soaps, refillable printing cartridges and, of course, recycled paper.

Fact: If every office worker used one less staple a day, we could save 120 tons of steel!

5.  FILL YOUR OFFICE WITH GREEN!

Again, we are not talking about the colour here, but, as mentioned in an earlier blog post, certain plants soak up indoor air pollution and make the air cleaner to breathe.  For a list of those plants, click here.

And we just want to show you a little teaser photo of something we are very excited about at Pistil...and ties in to the Earth Day theme perfectly!

Stay tuned next week for the full run down and photos....or you could always stop by the store and see it in person :)
