Happy Earth Month: Not Just Pretty Plants 11 April 2011
Pistil wants to wish you all a happy Earth Month this April! To celebrate, we will be sharing earth-related posts to get you thinking about living a more "green" life.
To start it off, we want to talk about plants. We all know plants are good for the environment, but did you know that plants are good for your health too?
Often, homes and offices can emit harmful chemical pollutants in the air that can lead to numerous health problems. Carpeting, furniture, insulation, paint and fireplaces are usually the biggest culprits. There are plants, however, that soak up this indoor pollution and make the air easier and cleaner to breathe, and we sell them at Pistil!
SPIDER PLANT
The Spider Plant is probably one of the more common house plants. The main pollutant that this plant removes is Carbon Monoxide, so the best place to put them is in kitchens or rooms with fireplaces. The Spider Plant is also notorious for increasing moisture in the air, which we all know is good for our skin and bodies. They are easy to care for too - medium to bright light and only water when the soil seems dry.
RABBIT FOOT FERN:
The Rabbit Foot Fern is part of the fern family, another common house plant. Here, it is being used in a terrarium. The main pollutant that this fern removes is Formaldehyde. If you have recently bought new carpets or furniture, place them nearby. They are also easy to care for - medium to bright light and only water when the soil seems dry.
STRIPED DRACAENA
Another popular house plant is the Striped Dracaena, which we have in tree form at the shop and is really a lovely addition to your home or office. The main pollutant that this plant removes is, again, Formaldehyde, so you if you are introducing new carpets or furniture to your space, get one of these.
PEACE LILIES
Like the Spider Plant, the Peace Lily both soaks up indoor air pollution and adds moisture to the air. The main pollutants the Peace Lily removes is Formaldehyde and Benzene. It can pretty much be placed anywhere in your house because it just looks pretty! You only need to water it once a week and thrives in shady areas.
You can never have too many plants in your home or office, so we wanted to include two more of our favourites:
STAGHORN FERN

We used the Staghorn Fern here in a terrarium. We love its lush and long green leaves.
ZZ PLANT OR ZAMIOCULCAS
Another great additon to your home and office!
So, there is your helpful plant lesson of the day. Stay tuned for Wednesday`s post on what sustainable products we use at Pistil (yes, we are posting twice this week!)
