Happy Earth Month: Sustainability at Pistil
13 April 2011

For our second Earth Month post, we wanted to show you what we are doing to live "greener".

We know it may sound cliché, but we really do believe that every little bit helps.  Here are the ways that Pistil is helping the environment:

1.  Locally sourced plants and flowers

All of our flower and plant products are sourced from Ontario.  Not only does it decrease our carbon footprint and support local growers, the flowers are fresher, which means you, the customers, get a better product that looks great and lasts longer.

2. Open Fridge Design = Less Energy

(see Robin in the fridge on the right?)

Our fridge is designed so that it doesn`t need electricity to run.  Instead it uses water!  And, because the fridge is open, we don`t need air conditioning because it provides enough cool air for the store....even in the summer, we are always wearing sweaters and long sleeves!

3. Air Plants

As we mentioned in Monday`s post, a lot of our plants purify the air by soaking up indoor air pollution.  Spend some time in the store - you will be breathing fresher!!  Or better yet, buy some of these plants for your home and office.

4.  Sustainable Products

We try to use all sustainable products within the store:

- We separate our garbage and all our garbage bags are compostable
- The majority of our packaging is made from 100% recycled products
- Some of the pots we use are biodegradable
- We use all halogen and LED lights in the store
- All paper bags, no plastic
- And all the paper we use is recycled paper

So, now that you know what we do, we would like to know what you do in your homes and office to live "greener"?
