Travel Inspiration - From Japan With Love 12 January 2011

Hey, it`s Robin here, back from my trip to Japan. I found every aspect of my trip so inspiring and took tons of pictures, so I wanted to share some of my favourites with you.
Architecture and Design
Seeing all the shrines and temples really got me thinking - How were these buildings created thousands of years ago, without all the technology we have now? And everything is made out of nautral resources.
Many temples were built with absolutely no nails, but by meticulously interlocking wood so that not even the strongest earthquake (Japan is prone to earthquakes and typhoons) could shake. Shingles were made out of layers upon layers of bark.
All this architecture made me think about our display units at Pistil. Hmmm...

The design below was carved out of one piece of wood! Crazy!

The photo below is actually someone`s backard. They are so different than ours here in Canada.

Nature
I found all the colourful creatures, succulent plant life and sprawling landscapes so inspiring. How does nature do it?

The next two photos are from a place called Nara, where reindeers roam freely among the people. The story is that, when Buddha blessed this piece of land, all these reindeers just showed up and never left. And they are still there today! Weird eh?

This is me tree hugging - I love trees!

Art
Inside these shrines were original paintings and sketches that the Japanese people decorated their temples with.

Culture
There is so much history and culture in Japan. I was there for New Years and to see the amount of people going to the temples to give thanks and pray for a good year. There was an insane amount of people! It made me pretty proud to be Japanese. Even though the crowds were so oerwhelming it was nice to see that many of their traditions are still alive and well.

And Lastly, my Dad
My dad is one of my true inspirations in life. He has made the person I am today. I have learned so much through him and his encouraging words. I would absolutely not be the strong and independent person I am if it wasn`t for him. He has always realized my creative side and has pushed me to truly explore all aspects of it and has supported me every step of the way.

And now I will turn it over to you...what places have you visited that inspire you??
