Welcome Spring With Orchids! 23 February 2011
Now that Spring is approaching, we want to get you thinking about Orchids. This is the first of two posts that will give you the low down on this often mysterious, but beautiful flower that we, at Pistil, just love!
For this first post, we thought we would show you some photos of where all our Orchids come from - the Orchid farm! We recently took our camera on a little field trip there and took photos of how they are cultivated from a seedling to a beautiful flower.
The Orchid greenhouse at the Orchid farm
Renee and rows and rows of purple Phaeleonopsis Orchids
The seeds are rooted here in these mini pots and then they are moved to these....
Believe it or not, Orchids are air plants. At the farm, they are hung from the ceiling of the greenhouse in contraptions that resemble trees. And this is how they cultivate. Not how you pictured it huh?
Lady Slipper Orchids are grown in these "test tubes" because they thrive in more of a swamp environment. Lady Slippers actually grow wild in the Muskoka region, but you cannot touch them, due to preservation laws.
We love the Oncidium Orchids! The brown/deep red ones are called Cherry Baby Orchids and they smell like chocolate...Mmmmm
These are Cattelaya Orchids. The white and purple ones are mini Cattelayas
Ellen, the owner of the Orchid farm, holding some Dendrobium Orchids
These Butterfly Orchids, part of the Oncidium family, actually look like flying butterflies, or aliens - we are not sure which! Either way, they are beautiful!
Spider Orchids, hence the shape and look to them.
And one last shot of Renee surveying the goods.
Now that you know how Orchids are grown and where we get our orchids from, stay tuned for next week on how to care for orchids...it`s easier than you think!
